By extracting heat energy from the outside air rather than relying solely on an electric element, modern units can typically deliver around four times more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume, with current models achieving COP figures of around 4.2 under standard test conditions. This can reduce hot water energy consumption by approximately 60–75% compared with conventional electric resistance heating, depending on the system, operating conditions and household hot water use. With modern R290 technology providing excellent efficiency and reliable hot water production, these systems are becoming an increasingly popular replacement for traditional electric hot water cylinders.

Modern mains-pressure electric hot water cylinders remain a simple, reliable and cost-effective solution for domestic hot water. MPH can provide a straightforward like-for-like replacement of an existing internal cylinder, often with minimal disruption to the home.
Alternatively, modern well-insulated cylinders can be relocated and installed outside, freeing up valuable cupboard and floor space within the home's footprint. With excellent thermal insulation and straightforward installation options, an external cylinder can be a practical solution when replacing or upgrading your existing hot water system.

Gas continuous-flow water heating remains a practical and reliable solution for many applications, particularly where site conditions or existing services make gas the most suitable option.

Heat pump water heaters are generally the most energy-efficient, around three to four times more efficient than standard electric cylinders. The payback period is typically five to seven years, depending on usage, the more water used the faster the payback.
The life of a hot water cylinder can vary considerably depending on the type of cylinder, water quality, installation and ongoing maintenance. Some modern cylinders now carry warranties of up to 10 years, although these warranties may include specific servicing and maintenance requirements. Many cylinders are fitted with a sacrificial anode, which is designed to corrode in preference to the cylinder itself and is an important part of protecting the cylinder from corrosion. Where an anode is fitted, MPH recommends inspecting it after the first 12 months. Based on its condition, we can then establish an appropriate replacement schedule for that particular installation and water supply, helping to protect the cylinder and maximise its service life.
In most cases, yes An existing electric hot water cylinder can be replaced with an energy-efficient heat pump hot water system. Depending on the existing installation, we may be able to install a new cylinder in the same internal cupboard location, with a stand alone outdoor heat pump unit providing the hot water heating. Alternatively, the internal cylinder can be decommissioned and replaced with a purpose-designed external heat pump hot water cylinder, freeing up valuable space inside the home. MPH can assess your existing system and recommend the most practical and efficient option for your property.
